Nobody wants to replace an air conditioner before they have to. But there's a point where repair after repair costs more than a reliable new system. Here are the signs it's time to seriously consider replacement.
Most AC systems last 10โ15 years. Past that, efficiency drops and failures become more frequent. If yours is in that range and acting up, replacement is worth pricing out.
Older systems use R-22 ("Freon"), which has been phased out. If yours needs a refrigerant recharge, the cost has become very high โ often enough to justify a modern, efficient system instead.
If your summer bills creep up every year despite similar usage, an aging, inefficient AC is often the reason. A new high-efficiency system can noticeably cut cooling costs.
A good rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than a third of a new system โ or you've called for repairs multiple times in a couple of seasons โ replacement usually wins.
Rooms that never get comfortable, or air that barely pushes from the vents, can signal a system that's no longer up to the job.
Grinding, banging, or loud humming often points to serious internal wear. Modern systems also simply run much quieter.
A properly working AC manages humidity. If your home feels sticky or dusty even when it's running, the system may be failing at its job.
