When a tank still makes sense
Tight budget, a straightforward like-for-like swap, or a home where gas line and venting upgrades would make tankless installation expensive. A quality tank heater installed correctly is a fine choice — and when it fails at 8–12 years, you can reassess.

You plan to stay in the home for years, you keep running out of hot water, you want the floor space back, or you're already upgrading gas equipment. Over its 20+ year life, a tankless unit typically outlasts two tanks.
