Philadelphia winters don't ease in gently. The best time to make sure your heat is ready is before you need it โ a no-heat emergency in January is a lot more stressful (and expensive) than a quick fall checkup. Here's your checklist.
Start the heating season with a fresh filter for better airflow, cleaner air, and lower bills. Then keep changing it every 1โ3 months.
Turn the heat on for a cycle in early fall โ before you depend on it. A faint burning smell on first start is normal (dust burning off); persistent odors, weak heat, or odd noises are not. Catch problems now while a technician can come at your convenience.
Make sure furniture, rugs, and curtains aren't blocking supply and return vents. Good airflow keeps your system efficient and your rooms evenly heated.
This one is non-negotiable. Any fuel-burning furnace can produce carbon monoxide if something goes wrong, and CO is odorless. Test every detector and replace batteries. If you don't have CO detectors, get them.
Replace batteries and consider a programmable or smart thermostat โ lowering the heat while you're asleep or away can meaningfully cut winter bills.
Weatherstrip doors and windows so your furnace isn't fighting cold leaks. Your system runs less and lasts longer.
A fall heating tune-up catches small issues before they become mid-winter breakdowns, keeps your system efficient and safe (including a CO safety check), and often keeps your warranty valid. Book early โ fall is our busy season.
